Happy with Me

Teri Hausman (47-year-old host of Beauty Now)

I had no idea that I had become unhealthy, which is ironic since I have a radio show where I interview doctors and other health professionals about health, beauty, and diet. I had been a model in my twenties and thirties, too, so what happened?

As I turned 40, my weight had begun slowly creeping up. I really didn't see it, because I didn't want to see it. I'd look at pictures of me and think, "Oh, that is just a bad angle." I played tennis, did step class, rode bikes, and went hiking, and didn't see myself as heavy.

However, one day I woke up and found myself 45 years old and 30 pounds heavier.

I could tell you a million reasons why I had gained weight, but you've heard those excuses before. The truth was that I had been in huge denial. I thought, "Well, I am not 25 anymore so this is what the 40s look like." Yet I knew that wasn't true for celebrity women. So, how do those stars do it? I was about to find out about persistence, commitment, and changing my lifestyle and priorities for the better.

My husband and I went to dinner with some friends one evening. One of them had lost about 15 pounds. His wife told me he was working with a couple that were "trainers to the stars" and had this program called The Happy Body.

"Sounds good," I said. I wanted my body back. They warned me: Jerzy and Aniela are tough - they'll tell you to lose 30 or 40 pounds. I remember thinking, "Well that's you... not me. I'm not that heavy."

I was wrong, and I was about to be seriously challenged.

First day of The Happy Body program is picture day - pictures of me in a little swimsuit. Wow, what an eye opener. I couldn't even look at the pictures for the longest time. Then, to complete that first horrifying day, I got on their scale. I had always weighed in at 125 to 130, so when the scale tipped at 164 I thought for sure that it was rigged... no way was I 164 pounds. That was 20 pounds heavier than the day I delivered my kids! As my friend had predicted, Jerzy said I had a good 35 pounds to lose. I was shocked and upset, but I said, "Okay, show me how."

The plan seemed too good to be true. I learned I could still go out and eat at restaurants with friends and be satisfied and happy. To be honest, doing this regularly has probably made me the slowest loser in their weight loss program, but that has been my choice. As Jerzy says, "If the scale is going in the right direction - down - then it is good." He pointed out that if you lose 1 to 2 pounds per month, that's still 12 to 24 pounds in a year.

Jerzy and Aniela have a very inspiring, healing way, but they also don't mince words and can even be harsh at times. But sometimes that's the only way to get you to get it. And my success speaks volumes for their methods: To date I have lost about 25 pounds - the equivalent weight of 3 newborn babies!

Now I go out, and I am that person receiving the compliments instead of giving them. I wore my bikini in Cabo on vacation and felt great. Twenty-somethings were complimenting me - the mom of a 20-something.

Now I know why they call it The Happy Body. It is not just a way to lose weight but a program that teaches you to be happy with your body and yourself. I am now 47 and can't wait until I'm 50, because I figure I'll be in the best shape of my life.
